“Defend or be damned” – How a US company uses government funds to suppress pesticide opposition around the world"

A must read - a dynamite expose by Carey Gillam ( @clg724 ), Margot Gibbs and Elena DeBre documenting how the pesticide industry fought back against United Nations experts called for a treaty to strictly regulate dangerous pesticides, which they said were a “global human rights concern”, citing scientific research showing pesticides can cause cancers, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, and other health problems. Very timely since Target 7 of the Global Biodiversity Framework should be reducing pesticide use and banning hazardous chemical.

World leaders meet on Sept 25-26 to discuss the future of the plastics treaty. A powerful coalition of over 160 organizations, including Friends of the Earth Canada, is calling for a strong treaty that tackles plastic production at its source.

Why does it matter? Plastic production is skyrocketing, projected to triple in coming decades. This fuels climate change, harms ecosystems, and threatens human health.

The solution? We need a plastics treaty with binding targets to significantly reduce plastic production. This will help us create a healthier planet for future generations.

Here's how to get involved:

1. Ask a Senior person if they would be interested in sharing their climate concerns and advice for action.

Friends of the Earth Canada has signed a letter initiated by @ecojustice_ca, urging Minister Guilbeault to take decisive action on plastic pollution. The letter, supported by the Aamjiwnaang First Nation and several other environmental groups, advocates for a global plastics treaty that prioritizes the health and rights of Indigenous Peoples and frontline communities.

With the 79th session of the UN General Assembly and New York Climate Week on the horizon, Canada has a unique opportunity to lead the charge in securing a strong treaty that reduces plastic production and safeguards our planet.
