🍊 The little stickers you see on fruits and veg 🍊 The little stickers you see on fruits and veggies seem pretty harmless, right? You may have once thought that they were compostable, or even edible! After all, if they're allowed to be on food, they can't be that bad...

😖 Unfortunately, that's not so true! Maya is here to tell you why plastic price look-up stickers (PLUs) can be such an issue, from contaminating organic material that could have otherwise been composted to entering our aquatic environments.

🌍 It's for these reasons that we're urging the federal government to include plastic PLUs under their single-use plastic ban, while adopting compostable, plastic-free sticker alternatives.

💪 Head to the link in our bio, and take the pledge to fight plastic pollution yourself by joining Maya's Plastic Pollution Campaign!

🍉 You've undoubtedly come across those little s 🍉 You've undoubtedly come across those little stickers on produce countless times, but have you ever stopped to think about what they do exactly? Let Maya walk you through the basics!

Now, why are we calling for a ban? These stickers aren't the problem themselves - it's the plastic that these stickers are often made of that can lead to serious issues for our composting and wastewater facilities, and subsequently for our environment as well.

They may not seem like much, but when you consider all of the fruit in your local grocery store, then all of the grocery stores in your city, province, country, and across the world... the plastic pollution issue becomes immense. 🤯

After receiving a formal notice from @amisdelaterrefr, @notreaffaireatous and @oxfamfrance in October 2022, BNP Paribas had 3 months to comply with the French law on duty of vigilance. Yet France's most polluting bank continues to support new fossil fuel projects, which is incompatible with the Paris Agreement.

📣 Over 60 environmental and health organization 📣 Over 60 environmental and health organizations and business across the country are calling on the federal government to #ExpandTheBan on single-use plastics, by including these six new categories.

♦️ single-use bags and wrap
♦️ sachets, pouches and wrappers
♦️ bottles and caps
♦️ all takeout containers, cups and lids
♦️ produce stickers
♦️ filtered cigarettes

...as well as highly problematic polymers, chemical additives, and other types of plastic products. ⛔️

“Expanding the ban to the next six single-use plastic products is important for the health of people and the planet. The ban must stop manufacture for export as well as domestic use and manufacture. When the world comes to Canada in early 2024 for the plastic pollution treaty negotiations, Canada should show leadership with this expanded ban in place,” said Beatrice Olivastri, CEO, Friends of the Earth Canada.

We are urging ministers @stevenguilbeault and @jyduclos to commit to expanding the ban in order to achieve Canada's zero plastic waste commitment by 2030.
