Kill wild fish to protect farmed fish? I don’t think so

Posted By: FOECanadaOrg Comments Off on Kill wild fish to protect farmed fish? I don’t think so

The proposed regulation for the aquaculture industry misses the mark by a mile (well, a kilometre) – and what is the mark you may well ask? The Minister of Fisheries and Oceans has a duty to protect wild fish, fish habitat and Canadian fisheries waters from the negative impact of aquaculture.  Why is she abdicating

💚✨ After more than two months, Maya's Plastic 💚✨ After more than two months, Maya's Plastic Pollution Campaign has finally come to a close! Over 2,400 individuals across Canada pledged to combat plastic pollution, including over 68 classrooms, and THOUSANDS of plastic price look-up stickers (PLUs) were kept out of our wastewater and composting facilities. Thank you to everyone who participated!

💪 The fight doesn't stop here. We demand greater action from our politicians on plastic pollution, and we'll keep pushing until Canada's single-use plastic ban includes plastic PLUs.

👂 We’d also love to hear your advice on which plastic products need to be banned and which companies should be making switches from plastic to certified compostable products and packaging. Let us know in the comments below!

Thousands of Canadians, led by celebrated filmmaker Jennifer Baichwal (@intotheweedsdoc) and supported by author @therealmargaretatwood, are calling for a ban on #glyphosate and political accountability for pesticide reduction.

New Brunswick MP, @jenicaatwin, and Baichwal are urging Parliament to ban the use of glyphosate, Canada’s most widely-used weed killer. Atwin presented a petition – signed by more than 18,000 Canadians and backed by numerous environmental organizations, including Friends of the Earth Canada – to her parliamentary colleagues today.

Beatrice Olivastri, CEO of Friends of the Earth Canada, says, “Canadian politicians are burying their heads in the sand unlike the European Union which, for the second time, is assessing current science and hotly debating a ban on the use of this dangerous pesticide. Despite its commitment to “continuous review” of science, the Canadian pesticide regulator refuses to act. It’s time for politicians to be held to account for this miscarriage of responsibility.”

Environmental and food groups @davidsuzukifdn, @envirodefence, @foe_canada, @safefoodmatters and @ecojustice_ca take Health Canada to court over glyphosate product renewal. Specifically, they argue that Health Canada failed to conduct a thorough scientific evaluation of glyphosate before renewing its approval.

Beatrice Olivastri, CEO, of Friends of the Earth Canada explains why they filed a judicial review application in Federal Court:

“We’re going to court because we no long trust Health Canada’s PMRA to do its job in assessing whether products with glyphosate should be allowed to return to our marketplace. We see rubber stamping when, instead, PMRA should be studying recent results of independent research, especially bearing on the microbiome. Based on current research, Friends of the Earth believes glyphosate-based products should not be allowed for use in Canada.”

Over 2/3 of our food crops depend on bees, yet we're losing these important pollinators fast. You can support native bees simply by taking a different approach to gardening this year, thereby giving them a healthy home to thrive in!

That means opting for native flora, planting blooming flowers across a number of seasons, leaving branches and stumps around for nesting, and more!
