To Minister of Health Canada, PMRA, Presidents of garden centres and others to be named
“Gardeners Right to Know” means that I, as a gardener and citizen or resident of Canada, have the right to be informed by garden centres and the nurseries from which they source plants of likely hazards to me and to pollinators in plants and garden products offered for sale. This right must be extended to workers on garden centre and nursery sites. I endorse the right of access to information as an important human right, and one that is entrenched in legislation in many countries including Canada. Access to Information is a fundamental component that is necessary for the enjoyment of other human rights and democratic freedoms. In keeping with International Right to Know Principles, I agree that: 1. Access to information is a right of everyone. 2. Access is the rule. Secrecy is the exception. 3. Making requests should be simple, speedy, and free. 4. Refusals must be justified. 5. The public interest takes precedence over secrecy. Therefore, I call for the provision of information via postings or technology such as bar code scanners or QR codes to detail the use of pesticides and other chemicals in cultivation, transport, warehousing and point of sales of plants and garden products to be immediately accessible to workers and consumers along the supply chain.
