Letter to Minister Wilkinson, Minister Bibeau & Minister Hadju*
Thank you for your important decision to suspend the consultation on glyphosate and 15 other Maximum Residue Level consultations. The proposals to change maximum residue limits should only be considered in the context of independent science and a trustworthy process. We have, to-date, been missing both these components. I hope, before the MRL consultations are resumed, the government will have received advice from an independent expert panel and not use industry-funded research that hi-jacks the decision-making process. Under the Pest Control Products Act, the precautionary principle requires government to act with caution when scientific evidence is uncertain or the stakes are high. With mounting scientific evidence suggesting that glyphosate and neonics pose unacceptable risks to both environmental and human health, I ask you to insist the precautionary principle is rigorously applied by your officials in all decisions. After twenty years, it is a good and timely decision to review the Pest Control Products Act. If anything, I am more concerned than ever with pesticide exposure for humans, pollinators and wildlife. Thank you for announcing these important steps to protect the interests and health of Canadians, our pollinators and wildlife. I will be watching how your departments proceed with these announced measures. Sincerely,
