London’s Planning and Environment Committee meets this August and we have until the 15th to let the councilors know how we feel about the city’s antiquated bylaw. If we can change the “Neat and Tidy” bylaw in London it could spark changes across the country. Let’s call on them to drop Susan’s fines and costs totaling about $300.

Dear Members of London’s Planning and Environment Committee: (pec@London.ca) • Councillor Hopkins (Chair), • Councillor Lehman, • Councillor Lewis, • Councillor Hillier, • Councillor Turner On a matter of urgency, I'm writing to urge you, at your next meeting, to review and accept Susan McKee’s appeal against the weed wacking of her pollinator garden. Please quash her fine and bills. Then, I ask you to modernize bylaws that don't respect the rights of citizens to do what they can to protect nature. Recent events in London have demonstrated how London’s “Neat and Tidy” property maintenance bylaw is outdated and dangerous to pollinators and gardeners. It urgently needs to be modernized so it’s consistent with London’s policy commitments in your Official Plan. You have committed to: Establish London as a key pollinator sanctuary within our region (Policy 58 in Key Directions). and to Promote London as a pollinator sanctuary, considering how we can create and support environments that are conducive to pollinators in all of the planning and public works we are involved with, recognizing the important role that pollinators play in our long-term food security (Policy 659 in City Building Policies). In summary, at your next meeting, I ask you to accept Susan McKee’s appeal and take urgent steps to address the modernization of the “Neat and Tidy” bylaw so that it protects natural butterfly and pollinator gardens. In the interim, instruct your bylaw enforcers to refrain from destroying pollinator gardens in London. I consent to having this email letter placed on the City of London's public agenda.
