All We are Saying is Give Bees a Chance!
In our Ottawa office, we are singing a very familiar tune, but this time, all we are saying is give bees a chance!
Bees are under constant threat from habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use. As bee populations continue to decline, we are asking our elected officials to take strong action to protect bees and pollinators.
Without pollinators, much of the food we eat and the natural spaces we enjoy would not be here.
The recent neonicotinoid phase down in Ontario calls for an 80% reduction in the use of neonicotinoid pesticides in the province. While this is a great step forward to protect pollinators in Ontario, we have yet to see a similar plan put in place by all of Canada’s provinces.
Our 2014 Gardener’s Beware plant testing in the spring showed just how prevalent these bee-toxic pesticides are. Residues were found on more than half of the plants tested from Canadian garden retailers across three provinces. In Spring 2015 we are looking forward to conducting plant testing again, this time from coast to coast, to send a strong message to both garden retailers and our elected officials: We do not want our home gardens to be a source of exposure for bees.
All we are saying is give bees a chance!
