The Earth Needs All The Friends It Can Get!   PDF  Print  E-mail

For almost thirty years, financial support from individual Canadians has made it possible for Friends of the Earth Canada to take on the most urgent environmental and social challenges of our time.

We are the Canadian member of Friends of the Earth International, the world’s largest grassroots environmental network, uniting 70 diverse national members and some 5,000 local activist groups on every continent.

You can make a difference today by donating to Friends of the Earth Canada.

Stop Global Warming

Global warming or climate chaos - by any name this is the defining challenge of our time. That's why Friends of the Earth has a three point plan to:

1) Restore Canada's honour on our Kyoto commitment and beyond
2) Advance a carbon tax and immediate CO2 regulations
3) Protect vulnerable communities and fresh water from global warming

The time to act is now! Donate to Friends of the Earth to help Stop Global Warming.

FoE’s Canada Fund

This is what we call the operating fund. You can imagine what it takes to keep the door open and electrons zapping while FoE people strategize on the next course of action. If you ever have a chance to visit our offices, you’ll see how careful we are to make every penny count – and to get the maximum dollars into campaigning!

Seriously though, there are only so many years you can “punish” refurbished computers and printers before they give up the ghost. Re-used filing cabinets, on the other hand, never wear out.

A donation to this fund will be put to use on the most urgent campaigns and to address the most urgent needs in running a lean and efficient organization. FoE counts on gifts from individual Canadians to fund the majority of its work.

Devils Lake Education Fund

As part of FoE's mandate, the Devils Lake Education Fund has been established to facilitate public awareness through publications, public forums and media activities. This fund will also be used to provide information/materials, to engage and to mobilize public support to advance understanding of environmental issues and to ensure that the rights of Manitobans as provisioned in the Boundary Waters Treaty of 1909 are protected and promoted. Visit our Stop Devils Lake Outlet page for more info.

David versus Goliath Fund

Friends of the Earth needs your donation to take on big foes! It takes money to dig out secrets by using tools like Access to Information.  Costs of these requests can run into the hundreds and thousands of dollars. Sometimes what should be a straight-forward request lands us in court. When we used the Access Act to request information on sulphur levels for all Canadian gasoline and other fuels, Canada’s major refiners went to federal court to block our request. Talk about David versus Goliath! Big Oil thought they could protect their dirty secrets in the interest of “competitiveness.”

FoE, represented by Sierra Legal Defence Fund, maintained that the public’s interest, the environment, and human health would be better served with transparency of this data.  FoE still thinks this precedent should be applied in many situations where business “self-reports” information to government that should be in the public domain. Often these reports have a big rubber stamp claiming confidentiality.

When a new court case comes on the scene, there’s very little lead time. We think our supporters could help us be ready to go when precedent-setting cases appear. Your donation to this fund will help fund future “landmark decisions” like our recent victory intervening in the Imperial Oil v. Quebec (Minister of the Environment) case to protect the ‘polluter pays’ principle.

For more information on how your donation can make a difference now or when FoE takes on the next Goliath, contact Beatrice Olivastri.

In Memoriam

A donation can be made to honour the life of a friend or family member who has passed away.

Rather than sending flowers, people often choose to make a donation to a charity as a permanent way to remember their loved one. Family members and friends appreciate the thoughtfulness behind such a gift.

In memoriam donations are put to work in current campaigns to protect people and the planet.

A tax-creditable receipt is issued for all donations. If you so indicate, a card will be sent to the next of kin telling them of your thoughtfulness.
