Petition to Protect Wild, Native Bees
TO the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change
We, the undersigned citizens and residents of Canada call upon the Minister
The importance of wild, native bees in Canada to biodiversity and food security;
The real and imminent threats to wild, native bee populations including habitat loss, pesticide use, climate change, diseases and mites;
The need to build scientific capacity to monitor and protect Canada’s 800+ wild, native bees;
AND, BEARING IN MIND
Advice and counsel from scientists working as the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC) on the urgent need to act to protect six wild bee species: Gypsy Cuckoo Bumble Bee, Western Bumble Bee occidentalis, Western Bumble Bee mckayi, Macropis Cuckoo Bee, Yellow-banded Bumble Bee, and the Sable Island Sweat Bee;
Correspondence from Friends of the Earth and colleagues represented by Ecojustice advising of your time-bound legal duty to act on the advice of COSEWIC;
THEREFORE, WE CALL ON MINISTER McKENNA TO ACT TO
1) Protect the named six at-risk bee species under the Species at Risk Act (SARA).
2) Launch a federal “wild, native bee habitat protection initiative” to provide biodiversity reservoirs and build capacity to monitor and support Canada’s wild bees using best available scientific information. Require delivery and accountability from all relevant federal departments managing lands via the federal Sustainable Development Strategy.
3) Prohibit the use of neonicotinoids and other systemic pesticides on all federal lands.
